How to choose the correct answer in the PMP® Exam

There are different types of questions that come up in the exam and require different ways to tackle the question. There can be 5-6 different types of question in the exam. There are many ways to answer the questions correctly.

The PMBOK® Guide overrules personal experiences

Answer the questions from the perspective of the PMBOK® Guide, not from your own experiences. As the title states, personal experiences, at the end of the day, are personal and vary based on context. Choose the most logical answer based on the PMBOK® guide.

Do not be confused by the options

Think of the answer without reading the options. This will allow you to then read the options to find the correct answer. However it is still recommended that you read all the options before picking your final answer.

Read the question and answers completely

Make sure you understand the question fully by reading it completely. Follow process of elimination and weigh options to come up with the right answer. There is no way of knowing if you have made the best choice if you have not read all the possibilities.

Move on from difficult questions

If you feel confused with certain questions, move on to the next question and return to the more difficult one later. This allows you to retain your confidence and then spend the remaining time on the questions you skipped. It is also important to note that your first answer is generally your best so only make changes if you are sure or if clues within the text cue you another answer.

Watch your time

For the exam, all 180 questions have to be answered within 4 hours. You have about 30 minutes to answer 25 questions on average. Thus, check your timing every 30 minutes to see if you have answered 25 questions and decide if you need to speed up.

If everything else fails, guess!

If you are confused, then there is no penalty for guessing on the PMP® exam, although not recommended. Make sure you select an answer for all questions on the exam. Even if you guess, you have a 25% chance of getting it right.

Follow the bottom up approach

Four possible answers are provided that you can use to work the problem backwards to determine the correct answer. This approach is helpful in computational and lengthy questions. The last sentence can often contain the actual question so it can be used to save time.
